Spring is about a week away but it doesn't quite feel like it. It's still pretty chilly out there. That's ok. It's great weather for planting cool weather crops and getting a jump start on warmer weather crops with the winter sowing method.
Lettuce is the perfect cool weather crop. It's easy to grow and matures quickly, some varieties in as little as 40 days!
There's so many choices when it comes to lettuce but we narrowed it down to eight. this year. However, "Rocky Top" and "Mesclum" are a mix of several varieties, so who knows how many kinds of lettuce we'll actually end up with!
Milk jugs are perfect for winter sowing. They basically mimic a greenhouse. Initially, they were sitting on a heat mat, but the method works well without one. Each one of these contain a different variety of lettuce.
It's so exciting to peer down into a milk jug in the dead of winter and see something growing!

I'm especially excited about this Speckled Bibb lettuce. I can't wait to see it mature!
Time to transplant into cells. They'll grow here for a few weeks until it's time to plant them in the ground. This flat has 72 individual cells.
Come mid-May, we will have fresh salad mix lettuce to offer at the farmer's market.
