“Only in winter do the pine and cypress show they are evergreen.”

That's a quote from Confucius, a famous Chinese philosopher (551–479 BCE) . There's a moral hidden in there somewhere, but literally, speaking, now that the winter landscape is looking bleak we can truly see which plants are still with us and which ones have died back or gone dormant.

If you live in a zone with four seasons (or not), have a look around and identify some evergreens in your area. They make beautiful textured arrangements. However, they don't need to be made into formal arrangements, just laying some here and there can add some holiday cheer to your home. Here's a few (but certainly not all) that grow in the central Virginia area, zone 7a.

White pine has a soft, wispy look and texture.

Such an interesting texture!

In the fall and winter, some of these leaves turn a beautiful red and some stay green.

I think this kind of cypress might be a Hinoko Cypress.

Not all evergreens are conifers...

...including magnolias.

From left to right: Cedar, Noble Fir and some sort of ground cover/low growing conifer.

The product of conifers. Pinecones really add interest to arrangements.

What kinds of evergreens are growing in your area?
